Tierra II - Michelle Peterson-Albandoz, 2023
Michelle Peterson-Albandoz developed a strong affinity for forests during her upbringing in Connecticut and Puerto Rico. This connection has continued to influence her artistic career, as she is constantly reminded of the impact humans have on the environment through her experiences in these pristine ecosystems. Peterson-Albandoz now resides in Chicago, where she often encounters the destruction and construction of the urban landscape. She has found inspiration in the discarded wood from demolished historic buildings, using it as the foundation for her artwork. By removing the man-made elements and focusing on the natural beauty of the wood, Peterson-Albandoz's creative process becomes a reversal of time and waste. As she sorts and layers the wood, she is reminded of its past life as a tree, its transformation into man-made structures, and its ultimate rebirth as a work of art.
